Adult Women With ADD Face Daily Challenges

Adult women who suffer from ADHD have to deal with daily issues. They are often misdiagnosed or ignored because many doctors think of ADD as a disorder that is only affecting males and boys. Additionally there are many ADD symptoms in women change with hormones, and become more evident during puberty, and then resurfacing when estrogen levels decrease during PMS or perimenopausal.

Symptoms

Women with adult ADD are easily irritated and impulsive. They often take on projects without considering the implications, such as careers and relationships. Many of them have a high level of sensitivity to rejection which makes it hard to handle actual or perceived rejection. These women are more likely to engage in sexually dangerous actions than women who do not suffer from ADD, such as early sexual contact, casual sex multiple partners and unprotected births. Depression is often a co-existing condition or is a result of ADD and needs to be treated. ADD symptoms are more evident in girls during puberty, PMS, and as estrogen levels decrease during perimenopause and menopausal changes.


Diagnosis

While the ADD symptoms of women are similar to those of men, doctors could be unable to diagnose the condition due to incorrect assumptions that ADD is more prevalent in males.  adhd in young women  with ADD are more emotional than other women, especially when they are going through puberty, suffer from PMS or enter menopausal perimenopausal phase. They can be extremely impatient and go into things in at a rapid pace, instead of planning their lives in a controlled manner. Depression can be a result of or is a consequence of the disorder.
